An interview with lee stone - Founder and Head Brewer at shifty lizard

Nestled in one of Australia’s most prestigious wine regions in Mclaren Vale, Shifty Lizard Brewing has called Willunga home since 2017 and have been producing a wide selection of craft beers for almost 4 years.

What’s your origin story? How did you begin your beer journey?

I started home brewing from the age of 18 with your traditional Coopers Home Brew Pack. I then moved to the UK for almost 9 years where I worked as a drinks dispense technician for large breweries such as Heineken, Carlsberg, Coors & AB Inbev. This increased my knowledge on beer and passion for the industry.

Where did the name Shifty Lizard come from?

The name Shifty Lizard was a nickname that I gained whilst in the UK. Must be because I’m just a shifty character. This nickname soon became my alias for online gaming and any profile I built online.

What was your epiphany beer?

Sierra Nevada Torpedo

If you could work with any brewery in the world, which would it be?

Dogfish Head

What type of music do you listen to on a brewday?

Living End, Midnight Oil, ACDC, Powderfinger & Frenzal Rhomb

If you weren't a brewer what would you be doing?

I’d probably still be a drinks dispense technician. Not got the body anymore to be a stripper……. But that’s probably the beers fault anyway.

If you were invited to a party what beer would you bring?

Balters Cryo Mofo 100% a party starter

What was the inspiration behind Bruce Leezard WCIPA?

We wanted to make a beer with both a smooth malt body but with a citrusy hop kick to it! Bruce Lee-Zard was the perfect mascot for the job!
